Pacific Grove is a peaceful community located at the scenic northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula. Surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, Pacific Grove’s gorgeous coastal forests and thousands of migrating butterflies helped establish it as a popular resort destination and artists’ haven in the late 19th century. Author Robert Louis Stevenson was an early visitor who described it as the most dreamlike place he had ever been. Pacific Grove is bordered by Monterey in the southeast and the golf resorts of Pebble Beach’s southwest.
 
Pacific Grove is well-known for its elegant Victorian architecture. Other real estate includes lavish contemporary hilltop properties and charming pre-war and mid-century houses. Much of Pacific Grove’s real estate offers residents spectacular views over crashing ocean waves and nearby golf courses.

Lighthouse Avenue is lined with beautiful homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has an enticing selection of shops and restaurants. Red House Café serves delectable European-influenced café fare in a quaint 19th-century shingled house. Passionfish is a dining hotspot pairing seasonal California-style seafood, slow-cooked meats, and organic fare with rare wines. Poppy Hall is another must-visit for refined, quintessentially Californian cooking that specializes in skillfully prepared seafood and soul food. 
 
Cozy Crema offers gourmet espresso blends, freshly baked pastries, and homemade brunch and lunch dishes. Just off Lighthouse Avenue on Forest Avenue, Pavel’s Backerei is a beloved local coffee shop and bakery selling delicious coffee, giant donuts, bear claws, and other pastries. 
 
Across the street, Mum’s Place is an award-winning, family-run furniture store with a vast selection of items for the office and home. Other stores along Lighthouse Avenue include quaint gift shop The Quill, elegant fashion retailer Marita’s Boutique, and combined bookstore and coffee shop Bookworks.
 

Things to Do

Pacific Grove is close to all of Monterey Peninsula’s tourist destinations and surrounded by great beaches and stunning natural scenery. Asilomar State Beach runs for one mile along Pacific Grove’s northwest coastline. Named after the Spanish words for asylum and sea, Asilomar is a gorgeous coastal stretch with rocky coves and a popular surf spot. The private beach at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station is closed to the public but is a favored gathering place of a local seal colony, which can be seen from Ocean View Boulevard. Other easily accessible activities in the area include outstanding restaurants, art and cultural venues, and outdoor activities such as bike riding, kayaking, hiking, and whale watching. 
 
In October, thousands of migrating monarch butterflies arrive to overwinter in Pacific Grove’s eucalyptus groves. Their arrival is marked with the Butterfly Parade & Bazaar in early October. When the butterflies leave again in late July, the occasion is celebrated with the century-old Feast of Lanterns. Fireworks and lanterns fill the sky at Lovers Point Beach in festivities based on a Chinese folktale where two lovers transform into butterflies. The 4.4-acre park and beach at Lovers Point is one of Pacific Grove’s most popular places throughout the year, featuring a swimming pool and beach volleyball court on the beautiful oceanfront. 
 
The huge Good Old Days Festival in April features five stages of live performances, dozens of food vendors, and over 200 arts-and-crafts stalls. In December, Christmas at the Inns sees 10 local bed and breakfast inns lit up with holiday decorations and live music. 
 
First lighting the way for boats off California’s coastline in 1855, Point Pinos Lighthouse is the West Coast’s longest-serving lighthouse. The lighthouse has a museum on-site and is open to the public for tours on Monday afternoons. Point Pinos is surrounded by the 18-hole municipal course of Pacific Grove Golf Links.
